Spoilers below forEl Camino: A Breaking Bad Movieand its ending.
But this time hes heading to Alaska and a new life that hell live with a new last name.
There are no tears, just a very slight, almost imperceptible smile.
Jesses expression, for the first time in the entire movie, is calm.
But Im not sure if its quite that simple.
The movie itself gives us reasons to doubt that.
Ive gone where the universe takes me my whole life, she says.
Its better to make those decisions for yourself.
One could certainly argue that inEl Caminohe does just that.
But hes gotten where he is because other men steered him down this snow-covered path.
If he could start over as a young man, Mike tells Jesse, hed go to Alaska.
Every tool Jesse uses to escape Albuquerque is something he takes from other men.
He swaps Skinny Petes Thunderbird for his El Camino, something Skinny Pete himself suggests.
It was my grandfathers, he says.
Jesse is deciding what to do, sure.
But it doesnt seem quite right to say hes acting independently.
He relies on nobody more for that purpose than Ed, the fixer played bythe late Robert Forster.
After seeking out Ed inEl Camino, Jesse does choose Alaska as his future place of residence.
We cant see what the letter says.
Even when he doesnt necessarily realize it, Jesse is still following in the footsteps of Walter White.
Ed tells him that.
Mike tells him that in the flashback.
Or you might watch Jesse drive away and realize that he had no choice but to go to Alaska.
you’re able to say he finally escaped.
But you could just as easily say he had to disappear.
We shouldnt be able to see the end of this winding road or where it will take him next.
Walter White got something finite.
His penalty was death.
Jesse gets life, but not his own.
