Adam Sandler built his career on playing stylized oddballs.

Julie Bowen and Adam Sandler in Hubie Halloween.

Thats why we could so often enjoy Sandler at his most mean-spirited; it was all sketch-level shtick.

Neither did Sandler, it seems.

In other words, despite the surface similarities, Hubie isnt quite the wounded sociopath of Sandlers past.

No matter, though.

People cant stand him anyway.

That makes them less witty, but somehow more pure.)

But unlike many of Sandlers latter-day comedies,Hubie Halloweenis rarely lazy.

(Were the writers worried that we wouldnt get it?)

June Squibbs many profane T-shirts (Boner Donor, I Shaved My Balls for This?

Muffs Diving School, etc.)

would be a lot funnier if the characters didnt stop to talk about it.

None of this is particularly original, but nobody said you had to be original to make people laugh.

(Grown Ups 2is still probably the low point of his career in this regard.)

Even the obligatory Shaquille ONeal cameo sort of works this time around.

Thats not a complex, or new, or even bold idea.

But it feels right for the moment.
