A lot of them arent necessarily stand-up fans.
And it comes from a good place.
Its one of the worst heckles you’ve got the option to get, because they mean well.
Theyre trying to enjoy the show.
And bywoo!-ing, theyre trying to show you that theyre enjoying the show.
And Im like,Stop it!
Its like they know laughing happens at a comedy show.
On when audiences go quiet:
My biggest thing has been letting there be quiet.
Theyrewoo!-ing!Hopefully not no morewoo!-ing.
Let them listen to you for a second and trust that theyll stay on board.Because they do.
Its just my own insecurities.
But Im a joke writer.
I will write the harshest, best joke I can.
I would sacrifice any one of my values for a good joke.
Like, Ill flip on an issue if the jokes good enough, yeah.
Is that a fake voice you do onstage, then?
Im like, No.
When you get excited, or youre performing, your voice changes when youre projecting.
And theres definitely times in stand-up where it’s possible for you to tell it goes up and down.
But yeah, I get excited, and it gets loud and shrill and crazy.
Do you remember doing it early on?
When I would get excited about something, Id be like, Oh my God!!
And people would be like, Wow, okay.
Your voice really goes crazy.
So I knew that was part of how it worked.
It wasnt ever like I was like, Oh,nowmy voice needs to get high.
There are times I hear back, especially when youre editing the special, and I was listening.
I was like, How do people listen to this?
This is just what it is.
People are always gonna be like, No, theyre a bad person.
But the social-media world isnt the real world.
Because shes not on Twitter.
But a lot of these people live on Twitter.
So its like, Did you see what this person said?
And then theyll get canceled on Twitter where all these people are like, They should never work again.
And then maybe a news outlet picks it up.
Maybe their job was like, Oh, we cant publicly be seen with you.
It doesnt mean that youre not going to do things privately.
Youre kind of a pariah now for a [portion of the social media world].
Like, its not just liberals canceling people who say something offensive.
