A Christmas Carol (2010)

14.

Jodie Whittaker as The Doctor.

Stephen Fry is the head honcho and needs their help.

It certainly doesnt help that the episode promises a much more engaging antagonist than it delivers.

(A snowman who talks back to a lonely child?

Lets go for it!

A mean, dead nanny frozen in the pond?

But once these villains appear, they do little to present themselves as believable threats.)

Voyage of the Damned (2007)

Theres nothing disastrously wrong with this one.

Bonus points for the effortlessly tender ending, which reunites the Doctor with Amy and Rory.

Im that sort of a man.)

The crowd of recurring favorites including Jackie Tyler, Mickey Smith, and Harriet Jones round out this episode.

And then theres Donna Noble.

But that doesnt make Resolution any less enjoyable.

Its not particularly innovative for the series, but its a tidy throwback to whatWhofans love.

The only real flaw is the idea that River takes so long to recognize the Doctor.

Plot-wise, theres not much to speak of here; theres not even a bad guy to defeat.

Cant I ever have peace?

Capaldis Doctor asks in desperation.

Its another day in which no one dies … except, as the Twelfth drolly points out, himself.

Last Christmas (2014)

Now this ones clever.

No wonder everyone keeps invading you.)

Even after the episode reveals itsInception-style setup, the uncovering of each dream layer remains a surprise.

Her good-bye to dream-Danny is touching, and the Doctors arguments with Santa provide much-needed moments of levity.

(Who else but Peter Capaldis Twelfth Doctor would pick a fight with Saint Nick?)
