Its also an episode that deepens the dynamic between Judy and Steve.
How will her connection to Steve impact her ability to hide her crime?
Judy advises against violence as they head to the restaurant where the woman in Teds secret life works.
Importantly, Jen reveals to Judy that she had a double mastectomy after her mother died of breast cancer.
One gets the impression that Jen has told literally no one else about this part of her life.
Not only is Steve an asshole, but now Jen has lost a sale.
She thinks her boyfriend ofa year and a halfhas just ghosted her.
Ted was not a very good dude.
Jen presumes shes speaking of before the miscarriages, but Judy is really speaking of Teds death.
Both Steve and Jen are telling Judy what to do; both are telling her she cant go back.
Judy will no longer have the Secret Dick in her life.
What does this say about Jen?
And then Judy says, I have to tell you something.
How many times are the writers going to make us think that Judy is about to confess?
Probably at least once an episode.
No, shes not telling Jen about Teds death, but rather Jens fictional one.
If she only knew that Teds killer was sitting right next to her.
Im glad hes dead, Jen says.
And then Judy takes them home.
Speaking of that scene, its probably the best overall so far this season.
Both Applegate and Cardellini are great, partially because theyre not getting along in a new way.
Jen is confronting Judy, but Judy is fighting back, standing up for herself more than usual.
Its a complex scene that could have turned sitcom-ish or maudlin in the hands of lesser actors.
