This post contains spoilers for the plot ofDetective Pikachu.
Its a generational thing.
It passed me by.
Then having taken the engagement, I requested as much of the literature as I could find.
The thing that made a big impression on me was the Pokedex.
Not least because I loved the word Pokedex.
Also, it was a very heavy, big, considerable book which had everything.
Its everything that you gotta know about Pokemon.
But anyway, I then studied that.
Then the whole part of me that likes to collect things kind of kicked in.
It was all very engaging.
What was it like to act in the movie?
The only person who can hear him is Justice Smiths character, obviously.
But youre aware of that tone and the style.
Its brilliant, very witty.
And as for the other ones, you get used to it.
I like genre generally, and I like sci-fi, and I like that world.
Ive been away and I havent had a chance.
I havent seen any screenings or anything.
So Im looking forward to it.
Is there anything specific youre excited to see?Youve seen the movie?
I have seen the movie, yes.
[Warning: Spoilers ahead.
All of the more explosive scenes.
Thats something Im quite keen to see.
They were part classical and part Pokemon.
I thought it was very witty.
So I coveted them.
I just happened to admire them.
Theyre now boxed up in my [actual] apartment.
Im waiting for a wall thats big enough or strong enough to support them, because theyre huge.
Its a fascinating kind of postmodern object a classical stone carving of a Pokemon.Exactly.
It made me laugh, and it also made me greedy.
I was very, very covetous.
I really wanted them.
I just said to one of the design team, I really like those wall hangings.
The next thing I knew, they were mine.
Has your sort of Pokemon obsession worn off now that youre off the set?
Have you tried out Pokemon Go or anything?I still like my Pokedex.
It is a kind of fetish.
It hasnt worn off, no.
But no, no, Im still keen.
And I would love to go hunting sometime.
Well, its pretty easy to do on your phone.
So I need a kind of focus.
Pokemon hunting might be just the thing for me.
You know what I mean?
Thats the word I was looking for.
Somebody was in Strasbourg doing it.
It was just the random fact of Strasbourg that made an impression on me.
It would encourage you to go places you might not normally go to.
Thats part of the appeal.
I think they have differentPokemonon different continents, too, so thats kind of appealing.Oh, really?
No wonder people get obsessed with it.
Its a first-time director, Carl Hunter.
Its written by Frank Cottrell Boyce.
Its just a little bit different.
Carls influences are Roy Andersson, the Swedish director, and Aki Kaurismaki, and Wes Anderson.
So its stylized to a degree, which I think is very satisfying and amusing.
Its not quite like anything Ive ever seen before.
Im very keen that people should see it.
Its also rather moving.
He and I play father and son.
Edwyn Collins has written music.
Its a really good night out.
Its entertaining and its touching, moving, and funny in a weird way.
You mentioned having done movies in all sorts of different genres, likeDetective Pikachu.
I do like when it gets silly, you know what I mean?
I like it when it gets a little bit daft.
I like to be involved in things that are a little crazy and a little unusual.
Ive played a zombie.
Ive played a vampire.
Ive played a squid pirate.
Ive played a stoned-out rabbit.
Ive played an albino lab rat who had brain damage due to overexposure to hallucinogens during shampoo development.
Ive played all kinds of silly things.
My stoned-out rabbit sang You Really Got Me by the Kinks [inThe Magic Roundabout].
Ive never been quite able to express this, but somehow youre not doing any harm.
Youre doing the opposite of harm.
You know what I mean?
Not that I ever had any plans to harm anybody.
But you know what I mean?
Its simply to entertain and to bewitch.
That kind of thing.
I like it when it gets like that.
How cool is that?
Wait until the kids find out who I am.
Im hoping for a degree of respect, obviously, for that.
